Encomium – Lady Khadija al-Kubra
11th Ramadan marks the anniversary of Lady Khadija al-Kubra—the beloved wife of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace). The following is an extract from a sublime encomium to Lady Khadija penned by a member of Manaqib Productions:
You are the doyenne of the worlds’ women, Khadija daughter of Khuwaylid; the beloved wife of the Messenger of Allah, salla Llahu ‘alayhi wasallam; the first to believe in him and the mother of the faithful. Along with Mary mother of Jesus, Asiya wife of Pharaoh and your own daughter Fatima al-Zahra, you are a perfection that womankind will never see the like of. How blessed you are, O Kubra; how noble. How pure you are O Tahira; how lofty.
You were born fifteen years before the Abyssinian attempt to invade Mecca. Your parents were of noble ancestry and you a scion of the house of Quraysh. Due to your praiseworthy qualities as a young lady you acquired the name al-Tahira, the Pure One.
You were first married to Abu Hala, a wealthy and successfully merchant. You bore him a son named Hind, who would later become a companion of the Messenger of Allah, salla Llahu ‘alayhi wasallam, witnessing Badr and becoming known for his eloquence, and who would say: ‘I am the most honoured of people because of my father, mother, brother and sister. My father is the Messenger of Allah, salla Llahu ‘alayhi wasallam, my brother is Qasim, my sister is Fatima, and my mother is Khadija.’ When Hind was still a boy, Abu Hala died. Soon after you married ‘Atiq son of ‘A’idh for whom you bore a daughter. But then you became widowed for a second time.
You were grieved, but how eternally wise is Allah, who would soon grace you with al-Mustafa, the Chosen One.
May Allah be well pleased with Lady Khadija and benefit us by her.
